Flight Insurance cost and coverage

Flight insurance provides coverage for flight crash and other airplane related medical and general emergencies such as loss of limbs, loss of site, accidental injury, baggage delay, baggage loss or repatriation or emergency evacuation. The coverage begins while getting on board the airplane, continues during the entire flight and until the person alights from the airplane.

Typically Flight insurance costs about $15 for coverage up to $300,000 and can go up to $50 for coverage of $1,000,000. The insurance is very affordable and provides excellent coverage.

The key point here is that one would not board the flight if one knew that it would crash or if one knew that he or she may sustain some kind of injury. Also the number of flights crashing is very minimal. Most of the regular domestic and international aircrafts are designed very well and have being doing a great job for the past several decades. SO would you really need that flight insurance? …well, the answer is yes and no.

If you take multiple trips on a regular basis or are planning on a long vacation that includes multiple trips; the cost of you flight tickets will obviously be high and for a very nominal additional amount, you can purchase flight insurance. Here not only the flight insurance cost is low, but also provides coverage for multiple trips, so it is well worth it.

However if you are travelling within the country, one way flight tickets probably costs less than $150 or a single round trip flight probably costs about $200-$300. In this case, the flight insurance cost will amount to about 15% to 20% of the cost of your flight ticket. It is up to you to decide if you want to go for it. On the one hand, for a nominal flight insurance cost, you get good coverage and in case of an accident, your family members are not abandoned; on the other hand, such injuries or planes crashes are minimal to zero, so the need to use that flight insurance coverage may never arise. (I hear you saying…of course, that’s what we hope for!)

Also consider the total amount you would spend on flight insurance over a period of time, say five years. If you add up all the flight insurance you buy for every flight you take, the total may quite be a four digit number.

Flight Insurance Alternative?

If you ask me, I like a good regular travel insurance that includes flight insurance, trip cancellation, emergency medical care, and baggage loss or theft. This would probably cost a little more than the individual flight insurance, but here, multiple areas are covered and the chances of needing at least one of them during your travel are high.

Flight insurance is also called as airline flight insurance or accidental death and dismemberment insurance or flight travel protection insurance. Flight insurance provides coverage for individuals, families or groups of travelers. The coverage is applicable when the policy holder is boarding the plane, or on board, or while alighting from the plane. The coverage is [...]
